Azim and Azima submit candidacy for mayoral election

Former Attorney General Azima Shakoor and former CEO of MTCC Adam Azim have submitted their candidacy forms for the Male' City mayoral by-election.

The mayoral election will be held on January 13. Azima Shakoor will be running as the candidate of the ruling PPM/PNC coalition while Adam Azim will be running as the candidate of the main opposition MDP. Three council members will also be elected to fill vacant seats in the Male' City Council.

Azima Shakoor submitted her candidacy form at a ceremony held at the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) along with the ruling coalition candidates who will be running for the council seats. Azim also submitted his candidacy form at the ceremony.

The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume office in November. Simultaneously, the three other council seats became vacant as councilors resigned to take on roles in the new administration.

Notable candidates expressing their intention to participate in the Male' mayoral by-election include the incumbent City Councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih on behalf of The Democrats and former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed. The deadline for submission of candidacy forms will be reached on November 13.
