Committee evaluates resolution for inquiry into previous gov’t

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has begun evaluating a resolution calling for an investigation into allegations that the policies of the previous administration adversely affected national security. The resolution, which was introduced by Parliamentarian Abdul Mughnee, was forwarded to the committee with 53 votes in favour.

Presenting the resolution, Mughnee highlighted the importance of identifying any actions taken by the previous administration that may have undermined the security and sovereignty of the Maldives. The resolution also called for an inquiry into allegations related to the loss of Maldivian ocean territory in connection to the Chagos dispute.

Addressing the resolution, Parliamentarian Ibrahim Rasheed said that the previous administration was responsible for the Maldives losing part of its southern territory, directly impacting national security. He called for an investigation to identify individuals who deceived the then-president. Most members who spoke on the resolution expressed support for the inquiry. Members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have also called for an immediate investigation into the matter.
