Gov't signs contract to supply waste management equipment to atolls

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has signed a contract with India-based Lucky Global Project Private Limited to supply and deliver waste management equipment to 45 islands spanning four atolls in the Maldives.

The initiative is part of the Maldives Clean Environment Project, implemented by the environment ministry with support from the World Bank. Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and Lucky Global Projects signed the agreement, outlining the provision of waste management equipment for 45 islands in the Noonu, Raa, Baa, and Lhaviyani atolls. The total cost of the initiative is USD840,000.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Thoriq said that improving waste management aligns with the priorities outlined in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's Week-14 Roadmap, making the project highly valuable and significant. He detailed that the waste management equipment for the 45 islands includes machinery and other tools designed to safely dispose of various types of waste. He said that the project is expected to be completed within four months.

The ministry highlighted that the initiative will establish a safe and modern system for disposing of materials such as iron, plastic, and paper. In addition, the ministry has initiated the procurement of vehicles for waste collection in the islands, actively working towards providing vehicles to all islands in the country.
