Maldives concerned over US vetoing ceasefire resolution

During a meeting with US Ambassador to Maldives, Hugo Yon, Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has expressed apprehension regarding the recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) vote on Gaza. Maldives conveyed deep concerns over the US veto of a resolution, led by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), urging an immediate end to aggressive attacks by Jewish forces in Gaza since October 7.

In the diplomatic exchange, Minister Zameer reiterated the urgent call for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian aid corridors, emphasising the need for international intervention to alleviate the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region.

Beyond the Gaza issue, discussions between Maldives and the US Ambassador included collaboration in various sectors such as defense, trade, and people-to-people relations, showcasing the multifaceted nature of their diplomatic engagement.

The UNSC resolution, supported by thirteen countries, highlighted the global concern over the situation in Gaza. However, the United States, wielding its veto power as one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, opposed the resolution, consistently asserting its stance against a ceasefire.

The grim toll of the conflict was underscored, with more than 17,500 casualties reported in the US-backed offensive in Gaza since October 7, adding urgency to the international community's efforts to address the crisis and bring about a peaceful resolution.
