Maldives ready to strengthen national human rights system: Vice President

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has met with Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

At the meeting, the Vice President affirmed that the Maldives is committed to strengthening national mechanisms and government institutions at all levels to mainstream and uphold human rights. He also reiterated the Maldives' commitment to engaging constructively with the Human Rights Council (HRC) and its mechanisms and contributing meaningfully to the treaty body strengthening process.

The Vice President and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights discussed various mutually beneficial multilateral issues and noted the significance of multilateralism in preserving peace, enhancing living standards, and promoting human rights. In particular, the Vice President raised the issue of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people and the urgent need to ensure humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

The Vice President is on an official visit to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75) in Geneva, Switzerland, from December 11–12, 2023.
