Maldivian government has announced its decision to Embassy of Maldives in Ankara, Türkiye, to enhance bilateral relations and promote the political, economic and cultural ties between the two countries. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made the decision at the Cabinet meeting following discussions on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This was decided for various reasons, including the Maldives importing many essential commodities used in daily life and other important items from Türkiye and as part of additional efforts to encourage Turkish investment in the Maldives and export Maldivian goods. Furthermore, the number of Maldivian students studying in Türkiye for higher education and the Maldivian tourists travelling to Türkiye are increasing rapidly. Consular services will also be readily accessible following the establishment of the Maldives Embassy in Ankara.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, addressing a meeting with Maldivian residents in Türkiye, reaffirmed the administration's commitment to enhancing the well-being of Maldivians living in the region. He noted ongoing efforts by the government to implement measures for the betterment of their lives and highlighted the active pursuit of establishing a dedicated embassy in Türkiye.
During a press conference convened to disseminate important decisions made by the Cabinet, Under Secretary for Public Policy at the President's Office, Mohamed Firuzul, revealed that administrative groundwork for the embassy establishment is underway. He noted that essential administrative tasks and foreign sector preparations are already in progress.
Diplomatic relations between Maldives and Turkey were established in 1979.
