Higher Secondary students allowed to give Friday sermons

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has decided to allow higher secondary school students and those who have finished secondary education to become imams and give sermons during Friday prayers.

In a post on X, Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ai Saeed said the decision was taken to provide more opportunities for young imams and khateebs. As such, students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who can recite the Quran and are familiar with Islamic jurisprudence concerning prayer will be allowed to become imams and give Friday sermons.

Previously, the Islamic ministry provided a specific certificate allowing individuals to give sermons. The ministry has also decided to broadcast Friday sermons on television with English subtitles.
