The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has reveals that only one independent candidate has submitted the candidacy form for the Male' mayoral by-election.
ECM had opened the opportunity to participate in the elections from November 28 to December 13.
Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb confirmed that only one independent candidate has submitted the candidacy form and ECM has accepted it. He, however, mentioned that the candidate's details will be disclosed after the submission period concludes.
The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume office in November. The mayoral election will be held on January 13. Notable candidates expressing their intention to participate in the Male' mayoral by-election include former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim, the incumbent City Councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih, former Attorney General (AG) Azima Shukoor, and former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed.
