Maldives fisheries decline due to youth disengagement: Gov't

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has highlighted the declining state of the fisheries sector in the Maldives, attributing it to a lack of participation by the youth. He made the statement while speaking at the Ocean Explorers event, held at the Marine Research and Training Facility in Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll. The event was part of the 43rd Fishermen's Day celebrations, targeted towards students to familiarise them with the fisheries sector.

Speaking at the event, Minister Shiyam acknowledged the significant role of the fishing sector in the economy but expressed concern about the limited involvement of young people. He advocated for an increase in the number of youth engaging in fisheries to foster sectoral growth. In addition, he highlighted the current foreign influence in the fisheries sector and encouraged students to undergo training and express interest in pursuing careers in fisheries.

The Ocean Explorers event informed the students on ongoing efforts in Maniyafushi to establish and enhance a mariculture industry in the Maldives. Practical activities, such as identifying various marine life, were employed to educate students about fisheries research. Notably, Marine science students from grades eight to ten from multiple schools, including Imaduddin School, Jamaluddin School, Tajuddin School, and Ghaazee School, participated. The event showcased also research by marine science students, aiming to familiarise them with the field and cultivate an interest in the fisheries sector.
