Gov't commits to find to lasting solutions for fisheries challenges

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has expressed his commitment to finding a lasting solution to the challenges encountered by the fisheries and related sectors. He made the statement while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Masveringe Gunzaru Forum, held on the occasion of the 43rd Fishermen's Day.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shiyam acknowledged the persistent and substantial challenges faced by the fishing sector in the Maldives. He assured that efforts would be made to actively listen to and address the multifaceted challenges confronting the fishing sector, seeking comprehensive solutions.

Additionally, Minister Shiyam credited President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the decision to commemorate this year's Fishermen's Day in the capital, Male' City. He highlighted that the administration's manifesto reflects a commitment to resolving the challenges faced by the fishing sector. He also underscored that one of the primary motives behind choosing Male' for the celebration was a strategic cost-cutting initiative by the government.

The Masveringe Gunzaru Forum had a primary objective of addressing concerns and challenges prevalent in various segments of the fisheries sector, involving the participation of 40 fishermen from diverse regions. The discussions encompassed crucial subjects including the preservation of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for Skipjack tuna and ongoing initiatives to ensure the sustainability of the Yellowfin tuna fishery.

The forum also delved into critical areas such as the safety and security of fishing vessels, technical considerations in vessel establishment, standards adopted by private companies in determining fish prices. In addition, dedicated sessions will be conducted to educate participants on protective measures against scams and fraud, specifically tailored to safeguard the interests of fishermen.

Fishermen's Day is held on December 10 every year. The official reception for the 43rd National Fishermen’s Day will be held in Male'.
