PNC chooses Azima Shakoor as Male' City mayoral candidate

People's National Congress (PNC) has chosen former Attorney General Azima Shakoor as the candidate for the Male' City mayoral by-election.

PNC opened candidacies to contest the mayoral seat and three Male' City Council seats from November 30 to December 4. The main ruling party stated that Azima Shakoor received the party's ticket uncontested as she was the only member to submit her candidacy to contest the mayoral seat on behalf of the party.

Azima Shakoor has said that she wishes to become mayor to commence crucial development initiatives that she believes have still not been undertaken in Male' City. She also said that there is a greater need to strengthen the management structure due to the changes in the Greater Male' Region. She vowed to address major issues in the city and implement the president's strategic plan.

The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume office in November. The mayoral by-election will be held on January 13.

Notable candidates have expressed their intention to contest in the Male' mayoral by-election. They include former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim, the incumbent City Councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih, and former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed.
