Gov't plans to begin redevelopment of Ameene Magu segments

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has revealed plans to begin the redevelopment of the unfinished segments, 12 and 13, of Ameenee Magu.

The ministry conducted a meeting in collaboration with the contractor, Road Development Corporation (RDC), to address the unfinished segments of the Ameenee Magu redevelopment project. It was disclosed during the meeting that RDC is in the final stages of preparation to initiate the rapid redevelopment of the last two segments. Discussions also took place regarding challenges for road users and a resolution was sought to address traffic issues on Ameenee Magu and the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) minibus service routes, with the support of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

The redevelopment of Ameenee Magu had faced a temporary halt based on instructions from the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM). ECM had directed RDC to suspend operations until the conclusion of the presidential election to mitigate congestion, given that Ameenee Magu is one of the busiest roads in Male' City.

The redevelopment of Ameenee Magu is being carried out in 13 segments, with 11 of them already successfully completed. The project involves paving the whole 1.7km length of Ameenee Magu with asphalt and installing a new stormwater drainage system. The project was contracted to RDC on September 12, 2022, at a price of USD5.5 million.

Ameenee Magu is one of the busiest roads in Male’ due to the high number of office buildings and schools in the area. It is also one of the few roads that run across the length of the capital city and is the main network for utility services. The road also connects the traffic to all areas of the city but has been in poor condition for years.
