The Democrats has elected Parlimentarian Hassan Latheef as the party's president.
The results showed that Latheef was elected President of The Democrats with 1,704 votes. His contender, former Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) Hussain Amr received 1,300 votes.
In other key positions, Aishath Alaika Adnan was elected Woman Vice President with 1,954 votes, triumphing over her opponent Mariyam Rehan Nazim, who secured 1,006 votes. Hassan Firushan was elected Youth Vice President with 1,689 votes, beating two candidates. Fathimath Hamdha Mohamed was elected as President of the Women's Branch with 749 votes, while Mohamed Maseeh was elected President of the Youth Branch with 367 votes.
A total of 43 posts were filled through the election, with The Democrats members vying for a total of 1,043 positions, 271 of which had already been filled through previous elections.
During the press conference to announce the results, Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader Ali Azim said that the party is effectively maintaining order, citing the internal elections as a testament to its organisational skills.
Additionally, Azim went on to highlight that the election marked a historic milestone for the Maldives, with the largest number of individuals ever elected to various posts within a political party. He noted that 70 members contended for 32 posts, showcasing a high level of engagement within the party. He also said that 3,209 of the 5,883 eligible voters casted their ballots.
Furthermore, Azim explained that the results from each polling station were disclosed in close proximity to the respective stations following the vote count. He said that the announcement of interim results, however, faced a delay due to the submission of two or three significant complaints related to the electoral process. He also expressed admiration for the efforts of party members, highlighting their commitment to ensuring the internal elections were conducted with safety and efficiency.
