First-term election voting begins for the Democrats

The voting process of the Democrats' first-term tenure election has officially commenced.

Voting will take place across all islands where party members are situated. The election aims to elect the party's president and three vice presidents. In addition, positions such as constituency presidents, island presidents, atoll presidents, and parliamentary constituency presidents will be filled. An election is also scheduled to be held to elect the president of the Young Democrats.

A total of two candidates are vying for the position of president in the Democrats election. They include former Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) Hussain Amr and Constituency Member from Henveiru West Hassan Latheef.

The Democrats are competing for a total of 1,043 positions, with 271 positions already filled through election. The appointments will be made for 35 positions during the election process. The party has identified 721 vacancies, including seats in the island assembly and atoll assemblies. The total number of eligible voters in the election is 5,883.

Formed by former President Mohamed Nasheed, the Democrats actively participated in the recent presidential election, securing the third-largest number of votes.
