ECM expresses over holding parliamentary election after Ramadan

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has expressed concern over the recommendation of the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions to hold the parliamentary election at the earliest date after Ramadan.

The parliamentary election coincides with the last days of the month of Ramadan. The ECM has requested the independent institutions committee to amend the law to hold the parliamentary election earlier. However, the committee recommended that the election be held on the earliest possible date after the month of Ramadan as the law provides a 30-day period after Ramadan to hold the election.

Speaking to PSM News, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said the commission is concerned over the committee's recommendation. He said that it would result in the parliamentary election most being held during the Eid holidays, which would significantly reduce the turnout and make it difficult for ECM to hire election officials.

Additionally, Habeeb said that following the recommendation of the committee would lead to ECM being unable to hold a second round of elections. He also noted concerns that candidates would face challenges in campaigning during the month of Ramadan.

However, Habeeb said he would respect the recommendations of the committee and that the ECM will make a decision in its next meeting. He said that the members will address the challenges they would face in fulfilling their responsibilities.

The 19th Parliament will conclude on May 28. According to the law, the parliamentary election must be held within 120 days before the terms expire. The official results of the election must be announced one month before the end of the current parliamentary term.
