Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim has stated that nationalism drives the courage of individuals who sacrifice for the safety and well-being of the nation. He made the remark during his speech at a ceremony held in Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll, to commemorate the sacrifice of Hussain Mohamed on Victory Day.
Speaking at the function, Minister Naseer highlighted the shared language, culture, and customs that unite Maldivian citizens and expressed concern over the diminishing presence of such values in the country. As such, he underscored the importance of fostering the love for the nation. He also praised the Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) for exemplifying the values on Victory Day and lamented the lack of awareness among children regarding the country's history and culture.
Additionally, Minister Naseer commended the small island of Thulhaadhoo for producing a national hero, whose actions will be a source of everlasting pride for the entire nation. He highlighted that any threat to the country's independence should evoke the patriotism demonstrated by the martyrs and defenders on Victory Day. He also expressed a special commitment to prioritising the cultivation of a love for the country among the younger generation.
Thulhaadhoo Island Council has decided to annually celebrate Victory Day and commemorate the sacrifice of Hussain Mohamed, a native of the island. Victory Day, observed each year, memorialises the Maldivians who lost their lives during the terrorist attack on November 3, 1988, led by a group of Maldivians and executed by armed mercenaries affiliated with a Tamil secessionist organisation from Sri Lanka. The day also serves as a tribute to the martyrs who gave their lives in defense of the country's sovereignty, independence, and religion.
