Ahmed Shareef has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Police Board and Aishath Noora Mohamed has been appointed as the Deputy Chairperson.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu constituted the new Police Board on November 23 under Section 75(a) of the Police Service Act. The new board comprises Ahmed Shareef and Aishath Noora Mohamed, who were appointed by the President, as well as Ali Naseer Gasim, Ahmed Saudhy and Ahmed Azeem, who represent professionals from technical fields. The board also comprises Hamid Abdul Ghafoor and Safa Shareef, who were selected from the general public.
The Police Board was formed in 2021 under the Police Service Act. The board is responsible for appointing the police commissioner and deputy police commissioners, conducting the vetting process for their appointment, and providing counsel to the relevant senior government officials to ensure the Maldives Police Service carries out its legal responsibilities as specified under the Police Service Act.
The seven-member board consists of two members appointed by the president, three technical experts and two members representing the general public. Only those who are not serving in the police service are appointed to the board. The board members are appointed for a four-year term.
