Fenaka fined USD272,000 for incomplete EIAs

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a fine of USD272,000 on Fenaka Corporation Limited for its failure to complete the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports on various islands.

EPA stated that Fenaka commenced the construction of powerhouses on 21 islands without completing the EIA. The conclusion was based on information exchanges and documentation shared between the EPA and Fenaka. The EPA also stated that all the projects involved the relocation of powerhouses away from residential areas. EPA noted that it had previously taken action against Fenaka on six occassions for violating the regulations related to the preparation of the EIA report.

EPA als published the list of islands on which Fenaka conducted the projects without completing the EIA. They include islands in Haa Alifu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Shaviyani Atoll, Raa Atoll, Noonu Atoll, Lhaviyani Atoll, and Laamu Atoll.

EPA stated that Fenaka has been granted a one-month period to settle the imposed fine. The EPA also urges strict compliance with the regulations for the preparation of the EIA reports for all future projects.
