New clock tower inaugurated in Maafannu ward

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the new clock tower in Maafannu ward.

The modernised clock tower was designed to appear similar to the original clock tower. The clock tower can timely air the calls to prayer and display important announcements and messages. The original clock tower, built in 1990, holds historical significance as a generous gift from Sri Lanka to the Maldives. It was presented on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Maldivian Independence. Sri Lanka was the first country to acknowledge the Maldives' independence.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Muizzu said that the tower's development was initiated under his mayorship at the Male' City Council. He also said that the new clock tower is designed to resonate with all age groups and similar buildings in the city will also be renovated in line with the times.

Also at the ceremony, Dr. Ikleel Shareef, the Managing Director of Pioneers Maldives Private Limited which built the clock tower, said that he is most pleased with the fact that the inauguration of the building was the first ceremony President Muizzu joined since being sworn in. He noted that the President had closely monitored the project. He added that the building includes four clocks and is designed as a symbol of the unity of Islam.
