Speaker Nasheed resigns amid no-confidence motion

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has resigned from his position.

The resignation was announced during a meeting convened to address the no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed. The announcement of Nasheed's resignation was articulated to the Parliament sitting by Parliamentarian Ibrahim Shareef, who presided over the sitting. Nasheed subsequently confirmed to the assembly that he had submitted his resignation.

In the formal resignation letter, Nasheed expressed his concern that continuing in the role of speaker would exacerbate the damage inflicted upon the parliamentary system by the majority party.

Nasheed, who is also a former president, was appointed the speaker on May 28, 2019 with 67 votes in favour.
