Parliamentarian Jeehan Mahmood has been elected as the Chair of the Committee on Democracy and Human Rights of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Jeehan was elected to a seat in the Committee on Democracy and Human Rights in 2021. She is the first Maldivian to become a member of a committee of the IPU.
The IPU is an organisation made up of national parliaments from around the world, aiming to protect and build global democracy through political dialogue and concrete action. Currently, IPU comprises 178 member parliaments and 12 associate members.
The IPU Committee on Democracy and Human Rights is one of the most crucial permanent committees in the union. The committee examines current and developing challenges to democracy and human rights. As such it proposes parliamentary action on these examinations at both national and international levels through the political resolutions it sets out once a year, which is adopted by the entire IPU membership.
