The Criminal Court of the Maldives has sentenced Mohamed Ameen to 27 years in prison. He is accused of being the leader of the ISIS in the Maldives. His trial in court was conducted in private.
Ameen was charged with being a terrorist organisation and conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism. He was found guilty of both charges and sentenced to 27 years in prison, He, however, has been in custody for four years and currently has 23 years left to serve.
Ameen was also suspected of involvement in the Sultan Park bombing in Male' City, which injured many individuals in 2007. He fled the country to Sri Lanka after the bombing and was arrested in 2011 after the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) to issue a red notice on him. He was also arrested in 2019 on terrorism charges after being brought back to the Maldives. In addition, he is on the United States (US) Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list of terrorists, making him the first Maldivian national to be named on the list.
