Gov't allocates USD1.3 million to ex-Presidents

Ministry of Finance has allocated USD1.3 million in the proposed state budget for 2024 to provide the allowances to former presidents.

The budget includes allowances for five presidents, with the largest allowance allocated to run their offices. Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom will receive the largest allowance, as USD58,000 in monetary allowance has been allocated for him next year.

Meanwhile, former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has refused the monetary allowance while former President Mohamed Nasheed, former President Abdulla Yameen, and outgoing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will receive around USD39,000 in monetary allowance each next year. In addition, all five presidents will be given a living allowance of USD195,000, and USD681,000 has been set aside for their offices and USD227,000 has been set aside for medical allowances.

In total, USD279,000 has been allocated to former President Maumoon, USD221,000 has been allocated to former President Waheed, and USD259,000 each has been allocated to former President Nasheed, former President Yameen and President Solih.
