President-elect vows to prioritise commemoration of Victory Day

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will begin giving its full attention to commemorating Victory Day from next year.

In his message, President-elect Muizzu highlighted the importance of commemorating Victory Day and providing information on the occasion to the youth. He noted that Victory Day has been celebrated in a colourful manner for years, but the attention paid to commemorating the occasion has decreased in the past five years.

Victory Day is marked every year in remembrance of the 19 Maldivians who lost their lives during the terrorist attack on November 3, 1988. The attack was led by a group of Maldivians and carried out by armed mercenaries of a Tamil secessionist organisation from Sri Lanka.

The day is also marked in remembrance of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to defend the country's sovereignty, independence, and religion.
