Yameen calls on PPM/PNC coalition to focus on parliamentary election

Former President Abdulla Yameen has called on the coalition of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) to focus on winning the super-majority in the upcoming parliamentary election.

During a meeting with supporters, Yameen highlighted the importance of winning the super-majority to enable President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to fulfill his pledges. He said that the super-majority should be won for the interests of the citizens, especially fishermen, and women, adding that the coalition will be able to assist the new administration in solving national problems with a majority.

Additionally, Yameen criticised the policies of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which currently has the majority in Parliament, highlighting that MDP members have never opposed any budget proposed in Parliament. He also accused the ruling party of giving up national sovereignty, emphasising the need for the new administration to focus on regaining it.

As such, Yameen said he would discuss with President-elect Muizzu appealing the decision made by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the Chagos dispute. He also noted that the President-elect has made the decision to remove all foreign troops from the Maldives, in accordance with the wishes of the people.
