UNGA to hold emergency session on Israel following Maldives request

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has decided to hold an emergency session on October 26 regarding Israeli attacks on Palestine, following the request made by member states including the Maldives.

In a tweet, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid expressed outrage over the continuous attacks by the Israeli military on innocent Palestinian civilians, especially children. He also said the Maldives requested the President of the UNGA to resume the 10th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly in accordance with the Uniting for Peace resolution. He added that the Maldives stands with the people of Palestine and their legitimate pursuit to attain their inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination.

Afterward, the President of the 78th session of the UNGA Dennis Francis said that he will be convening the UNGA Emergency Special Session on October 26 following the request made by member states. The UNGA can convene an emergency special session within 24 hours if requested by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the vote of any seven members, or by a majority of the members of the United Nations (UN).
