The Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MNACI) has called on the authorities to inspect worksites and ensure the safety of employees working with heavy machinery and hazardous materials. The association made the statement following a gas cylinder explosion at Kulhudhuffushi Airport which injured several individuals on October 19 and a gas cylinder explosion in Makunudhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, which killed two people on October 21.
In a press release, MNACI stated that both foreign and local contractors should pay attention to the materials and equipment being used at their worksites. In particular, they should consider the safety and quality of hazardous chemicals, gases, and other such materials and their handling and storage. The association also stated that state authorities are required to review the safety measures to ensure the safety and health of workers and those around them.
Additionally, MNACI called on the Parliament to expedite its work on the Occupational Safety and Health Bill and on all stakeholders in the construction industry to follow its 2010 guidelines on construction site safety. The guidelines have been translated into various native languages of foreign workers. It further stated that all workers should take appropriate safety measures and that state authorities should continue to inspect the worksites and take corrective measures.
