Male’ Mayor by-election to be held before January 17

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced that the by-election to elect the Mayor of Male' City will take place before January 17.

Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb stated that the President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu must resign as the current Mayor of Male' before being sworn in as President on November 17. He clarified that ECM will conduct the by-election following instructions from the Local Government Authority (LGA). He mentioned that ECM will open the candidacy process for the by-election within five days of being notified by the LGA.

A by-election must be held within 60 days of a council seat becoming vacant, according to the law.
