The Spokesperson of the Office of the President-elect Firuzul Abdulla Khaleel has announced that discussions are in progress for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to be held on November 17 at Republic Square in Male' City.

During a press conference, Firuzul explained that the arrangements for the ceremony would be managed by the Parliament of the Maldives in accordance with the Constitution. He revealed ongoing discussions between the Parliament and the Office
of the President-elect regarding the possibility of holding the ceremony at Republic Square. He, however, cautioned that adverse weather conditions might necessitate changes to the planned ceremony.

The official commencement date of the presidential term was November 11 from 1968-2013. However, in 2013 the presidential term began on November 17 after the Supreme Court annulled the first round of the presidential election. Therefore, the first round of that year’s election was held on November 11, the second round was held on November 16 and the President was sworn in on November 17.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who was sworn in on November 17, 2018, has highlighted the historical significance of November 11 and said that he would work to ensure that the transition of power takes place on that day.
