Ministry of Education has launched an online portal that would allow individuals to submit applications for teaching licenses via the One-Gov platform. The ministry stated that digital license cards will be issued to teachers through the portal.
During the portal launching ceremony, Minister Aishath said the registering and licensing teachers will ensure they stay updated with the latest knowledge and skills in an ever-changing world. She said it will provide parents with reassurance that their children are being taught by capable professionals, elevating the status of teachers.
The government ratified the Education Act in 2020 and formed the Teachers Registration Board to issue teaching licenses and ensure that teachers working in schools and education centres have the necessary educational and technical skills. The education ministry launched the online portal to ease the convenience of individuals submitting their applications to receive the digital teaching license card.
The ministry will also accept applications for the school leadership license and school professional License through the online portal. The school leadership license is required for positions in leadership within schools and pre-schools while the school professional license is issued to professionals working with students in schools and educational institutions who are not under the supervision of a holder of a teaching license or school leadership license. It includes therapists, counselors, school health officers, sports supervisors, vocational instructors, and librarians.
The ministry began the process of issuing licenses to existing teachers in August. The work will be completed by January next year, after which, individuals will only be able to work as teachers in schools and other educational institutions in the Maldives after they receive a teaching license.
