The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced the decision to submit a new no-confidence motion against Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
MDP has confirmed that it has gathered the necessary number of signatures to initiate a no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed. The removal of the speaker or deputy speaker requires a majority vote from parliamentarians. Specifically, if all 87 members are present, one-fourth of the members must vote in favour of the no-confidence motion to pass. As such, the party has submitted the motion with the signatures of 22 out of the 87 parliamentarians.
MDP had also submitted a no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed in the past. However, the motion was withdrawn when it was not included on the agenda, coinciding with its submission alongside a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.
