President-elect chooses Guraidhoo for inaugural visit

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has chosen Guraidhoo, Thaa Atoll, as his inaugural destination to visit, given that it garnered the highest number of votes for him during the presidential election.

In the second round of the election on September 30, Dr. Muizzu secured the highest number of votes in Guraidhoo, with 625 votes or 74.05% of the total vote. He also received 75.57% of the vote in one polling station and 72.39% in the second. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 219 votes or 25.95% of the votes from the island.

President-elect Muizzu expressed that during his campaign, residents from various islands had urged him to visit as many locations as possible. As such, he decided to prioritise Guraidhoo, where he achieved the highest voter support. He, however, did not specify a date for the visit. In addition, he conveyed his commitment to visiting all the islands in the Maldives promptly if he emerges victorious in the presidential election.

The final results show that Dr. Muizzu, the presidential candidate of opposition People's National Congress (PNC), won with 129,159 votes, which is 54.04% of the total. President Solih, the presidential candidate of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) received 109,868 votes, which is 45.96%. Dr. Muizzu's victory in the second round of the election marked President Solih's first defeat in his 29-year political career.
