Election laws must be modernised: ECM

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has stated that the laws regarding elections must be modernised.

During a meeting held to publish the final results of the presidential election, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said that the elections-related laws were formulated 15 years ago. As such, he said that ECM needs to hold discussions with political parties and relevant authorities on changing the laws. He emphasised the need to amend the laws need to suit the current situation, describing various challenges during elections such as early voters having to face unnecessary difficulties due to some Supreme Court guidelines having been made into laws.

Furthermore, ECM requested all candidates to submit their campaign finance report within the next 60 days. The commission also instructed them to remove the campaign flags and banners from the streets within the next 10 days.
