The Parliament of the Maldives has decided to halt efforts to hold a referendum on changing governance in the Maldives and instead prioritise the transition of government.
At a sitting, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed provided details of his recent meeting with President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and said that he has assured he will give his full support to the seamless transition of government. He also said that he will be overseeing preparations to hold the swearing-in ceremony at the Parliament.
Additionally, Speaker Nasheed said they also discussed the referendum at the meeting and agreed to postpone the vote. He added that members of The Democrats also wish to hold off on holding a referendum for now and that President-elect Muizzu agreed that the vote can be held at another time.
The Parliament is preparing to hold the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Muizzu and Vice President-elect Hussain Mohamed Latheef on November 17. The swearing-in will be held at the Parliament and former presidents, parliamentarians, senior state officials, and many invited guests are expected to attend the ceremony.
