President-elect commits to pro-Maldives foreign policy

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his commitment to a pro-Maldives foreign policy to preserve the country's independence and sovereignty.

At a post-election event, President-elect Muizzu said that citizens elected him to defend national sovereignty and he assured that he will carry out a foreign policy that upholds national interests when maintaining relationships with other countries. As such, he said that his administration will hold close relations with countries that respect the sovereignty of the Maldives. He also noted that foreign media outlets have labelled him as pro-China and anti-India, to which he responded by saying that he is pro-Maldives.

Additionally, President-elect Muizzu reiterated his commitment to remove all foreign military personnel from the country. He said that the citizens have expressed their clear stance during the presidential election, indicating their preference for the removal of foreign military personnel from the Maldives. He also said that foreign military forces should honour the sovereign decisions of host nations regarding their presence. He further expressed readiness to engage in meetings with foreign dignitaries during the transition period.

Furthermore, President-elect Muizzu said that he would form an administration that is committed to serving the people day and night. He also said that the new administration will be accountable to the people and will not be controlled by external influences, unlike the outgoing government. He emphasised that his Cabinet will comprise of educated, experienced, and hardworking ministers who will follow his instructions.
