Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the recent assaults on parliamentarians Ibrahim Shareef and Mohamed Nihad.
HRCM stated that the suspects had also assaulted bystanders during the incidents and expressed concern that political differences have resulted in individuals insulting, intimidating and attacking one another. The commission urged the relevant authorities to take action immediately.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has increased security in Male' due to an increase in gang activity on voting day. MPS stated that police officers are responding to a spike in reports of gang-related offences in Male', including intimidation and assaults on individuals involved in the presidential election. The police service stated that the reports are being investigated as serious cases.
