ECM commends behaviour of candidates during campaign

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has commended the exemplary behavior exhibited by candidates throughout the campaign period.

At a press conference, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said that the commission has observed the campaign activities of both candidates and concluded that they were conducted peacefully. He commended the candidates, political parties, and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for coordinating well to conduct peaceful campaign activities.

Additionally, Habeeb urged candidates to cease all campaign activities, including sending phone messages to voters, as the official campaigning period has concluded. He emphasised the importance of candidates respecting each other's rights and avoiding any actions that may undermine the electoral process.

Voting began for the second round of the presidential election on September 30. Polling stations opened in Male' City and the atolls at 0800hrs and will close at 1700hrs. A total of 282,804 individuals are eligible to cast their votes in the second round of the presidential election. The two candidates are Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate of the opposition People's National Congress (PNC) and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the candidate of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
