Over 12,000 observers, monitors, representatives for second round

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has stated that over 12,000 observers, monitors, and candidate representatives will be active in the second round of the presidential election.

A total of 12,083 observers, monitors, and representatives will be active in the second round of the election, which is an increase of 3,012 compared to the 9,071 in the first round, which included 3,428 observers, 3,836 monitors, and 1,807 representatives.

A total of 4,194 observers, 5,925 monitors, and 1,964 representatives will be active in the second round of the election on September 30. In addition, a total of 5,429 election officials will be active in the second round, which is also an increase compared to the 4,968 officials in the first round.

ECM stated that all officials have travelled to their designated islands. The commission has conducted a refresher training course for officials in order to focus on solving the issues faced during the first round of the election. The officials were instructed on maintaining queues at polling stations, designating invalid ballots, and other important matters. Locations of some polling stations were also changed to solve the challenges faced due to space constraints at voting locations in the first round.

The second round of the presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 30 after none of the candidates received 50% of the votes to win in the first round. The two candidates who moved on to the second round are Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate of the opposition People's National Congress (PNC), and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the candidate of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
