President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has made the decision to provide an allowance of USD3,200 to families who moved from Mundoo and Kalhaidhoo to Gan in Laamu Atoll after the 2004 Tsunami disaster.
Gan Island Council stated that the families have repeatedly complained that they did not receive any financial compensation after moving to another island. As such, President Solih made the decision to provide an allowance of USD3,200 to each household consisting of families who settled in Gan from Mundoo and Kalhaidhoo.
Additionally, the council stated that the government will accept applications to receive the allowance from October 5-21. The applications should be submitted by owners of residences in Mundoo and Kalhaidhoo or one of the heirs if the owner is deceased or unable to do so.
In 2015, the government moved residents of Mundoo and Kalhaidhoo to Gan after the islands suffered irrecoverable damages during the Tsunami disaster.
