The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has opened the opportunity for individuals to enroll in the required training programme to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP).
The transport ministry stated that the programme aims to align the licenses issued with international standards. As such, interested applicants can apply for the training programme through the ministry's SIMS portal.
Individuals holding permanent Azone licenses issued by the ministry are eligible to apply for the IDP programme. The completion of the ministry's prescribed training programme will result in the issuance of the IDP, which will be recognised in countries that are signatories to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
The government is actively working to gain international recognition for Maldivian licenses. As such, agreements have been established with countries frequently visited by Maldivians that use Maldivian driving licenses.
