ECM publishes final voters' list for second round

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has confirmed the completion of voter re-registration for the upcoming second round of the presidential election, with the final voters' list officially published in the Government Gazette.

According to the voters' list released by ECM, 282,804 individuals are eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming second round of the presidential election. In the first round of the election, a total of 282,395 individuals were eligible voters. A total of 409 newly registered voters have been included to the list.

Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb affirmed that the finalisation of the list involved a meticulous verification process of the re-registration forms. He further added that election officials are currently affixing their signatures to the list, and the candidates will follow suit.

The re-registration period for the second round of the presidential election was open from September 15-17, during which 50,047 individuals submitted applications for re-registration. Out of these, 38,763 applicants have successfully been included in the final voters' list.

The second round of the presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 30. A second round became necessary as none of the candidates received 50% of the votes to win in the first round. The two candidates who moved on to the second round are Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate of the opposition People's National Congress (PNC), and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Voting in the Maldives will commence at 0800hrs and conclude at 1700hrs.
