ECM receives 361 complaints on re-registered voters' list

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has officially released the re-registered voters' list for the upcoming second round of the presidential election.

In a tweet, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb pointed out that the electoral body received 361 complaints, adding the majority of complaints revolved around rejected application forms. He mentioned that there were few complaints about unauthorised submissions made under the names of individuals without their consent. He said that ECM is actively addressing these concerns and intends to publish the final voters' list in the near future. He also noted that no further modifications can be made once the final list is published.

Additionally, Habeeb said that out of the applications submitted, 38,763 were deemed valid for re-registration for the second round of the election, while 11,284 were rejected. He noted that the voters' list was made public and opened for complaints from September 21-23, following the closure of the re-registration period after a timeframe of 48hrs.

A total of 282,803 individuals are eligible to cast votes for the second round of the presidential election to be held on September 30. A second round became necessary as none of the candidates received 50% of the votes to win in the first round. The two candidates who moved on to the second round are Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate of the opposition People's National Congress (PNC), and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
