Senior members of the Jumhooree Party (JP) have pledged their support for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the second round of the presidential election.
The members include Dr. Ameen Ibrahim, the running mate of the Leader of JP Qasim Ibrahim, who ran in the first round of the election. Others who announced their support for President Solih include deputy JP leaders and council members.
The announcement was made at a campaign event held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with President Solih and Chairperson of MDP Fayyaz Ismail in attendance. At the event, President Solih expressed confidence in winning the second round of the election with the support of JP members.
JP has decided not to officially support any candidate in the second round of the election. However, JP Leader Qasim said that individual members are free to pledge their support for their preferred candidate. Qasim's close allies Riyaz Rasheed and Ilham Ahmed have also pledged support for President Solih. Qasim received 5,460 votes in the first round of the election, which amounts to 2.4% of total votes cast.
