Hassan Latheef and Amr vie for The Democrats presidency

The founding members of The Democrats, Parliamentarian Hassan Latheef and former Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) Hussain Amr, have announced they will be contesting for the position of the party's president.

The interim council of The Democrats has scheduled its internal elections for December 2. Some members have since announced their intention to contest various positions within the party. As such, Parliamentarian Hassan Latheef, who is the interim Chairperson, and Hussain Amr, who was the running mate of the presidential candidate of The Democrats, said they will be contesting the party presidency seat. In addition, interim council member Aishath Ali announced she will be contesting the vice presidency position.

In May, supporters of Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed left the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to form The Democrats amid internal conflicts that emerged after Nasheed's loss in the MDP primary election. Ilyas Labeeb ran in the first round of the presidential election as the candidate of The Democrats and secured third place with 7% of the votes.
