Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has addressed the concerns it noted during the first round of the presidential election.
In a press release, HRCM noted the claims on social media that employees were being compelled to support a specific candidate on the threat of dismissal or on promises of receiving promotions. The commission also expressed concerns over media outlets reports on vote buying, highlighting that every citizen has the right to vote for whoever they wish.
Additionally, HRCM expressed concern over claims that state resources being used for campaign activities and called on the relevant authorities to investigate. The commission stated that it is also looking into the claims and urged the relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of citizens are protected.
Furthermore, HRCM instructed candidates to use constructive criticism and avoid insulting each other during their campaign. The commission further called on voters to avoid political influence and to submit any complaints regarding the re-registration process to Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) before the deadline. It added that it is investigating various incidents that occurred during campaign activities and will publish a complete report after the election.
