Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has amended the regulation for taxi drivers to pay a USD649 fee for registration instead of having to submit a garage permit.
Following the amendment to the regulation on motor vehicle registration, individuals registering a taxi or vehicle for people with disabilities will no longer need to submit a garage permit. However, taxi drivers will need to pay a USD649 fee to register the vehicle. The regulations still require other vehicles to be registered with a garage permit, which shows that the garage owner agrees to the terms and is a Maldivian citizen.
The transport ministry has acknowledged the complaints made by individuals registering vehicles over having to pay exorbitant fees and leases to register their vehicles at garages.
