Opposition supports a referendum on governance system after elections

The opposition coalition of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC) has announced its support for holding a referendum on the governance system following the presidential election.

Mohamed Tholal, Spokesperson representing the Presidential Candidate of PNC Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, expressed the readiness to hold a referendum on the governance system, a stance endorsed by both parties. Tholal acknowledged the historical support of the PNC for a parliamentary system; however, the party has refrained from pursuing it due to the system not suiting the current political landscape of the Maldives. He noted the importance of establishing robust legislation and ensuring its enforcement as prerequisites before transitioning to a parliamentary system.

The Democrats, under the leadership of President Nasheed, have called upon both parties to adopt a governance system voting approach before the second round of the presidential election.
