Ali Azim appointed as Minority Leader

Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader of The Democrats Ali Azim has been appointed as the Minority Leader of the Parliament.

At the last sitting, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said that the parliament register now consists of 13 members of The Democrats, making it the party with the second-highest number of parliamentary representatives. As such, Parliamentarian Azim has been appointed as the Minority Leader.

On September 14, The Democrats elected members to various parliamentary positions, including Parliamentarian Ali Azim as the PG Leader. Parliamentarians Ahmed Zahir and Ibrahim Rasheed have been elected as deputy PG leaders while Mohamed Rasheed have been elected as Chief Whip. Mohamed Waheed has been elected as the Secretary General of the PG. They were elected to the positions with votes from all 11 parliamentary representatives of The Democrats.

The Parliament consists of 87 members with 56 members representing main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and 13 representing The Democrats. A total of five members represent main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), three members represent People's National Congress (PNC), three represent Maldives National Party (MNP), two represent Jumhooree Party (JP), two represent Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and three are independents.
