Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has declined to engage in discussions with Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed regarding a potential change in the system of government.
The Democrats, who secured the third-largest number of votes in the first round of the presidential election held on September 9, have extended a proposal to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to conduct a referendum aimed at altering the system of government before September 25.
Addressing supporters of The Democrats, Speaker Nasheed disclosed that the party had suggested to the MDP and PPM the idea of a confidential vote on the governance system, to be held before September 25. He also spoke about the need to seek former President Yameen's counsel when contemplating such a significant change. Therefore, he has requested the relevant authorities to facilitate a meeting with President Yameen.
The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has confirmed that Speaker Nasheed made a request for a meeting but that Yameen declined the invitation. MCS revealed the Parliament has been duly informed of the decision.
The Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has indicated it would require a minimum of 30 days and around USD3 million to hold a referendum.
