JP decides not to support any candidate in second round

Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided not to support any candidate in the second round of the presidential election.

During a council meeting, JP decided to refrain from taking sides in the second round and forming a coalition with the two candidates contesting the election. Leader of JP Qasim Ibrahim competed in the first round of the election and received around 5,460 votes which amounts to 2.4% of total votes cast.

Both the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the People's National Congress (PNC) had approached JP for support, with representatives from both parties meeting Qasim at Sun Island Resort to discuss terms of a potential alliance. As such, the presidential candidate's running mate of PNC Hussain Mohamed Latheef visited Qasim Ibrahim on September 12. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the candidate of MDP, also engaged in discussions.
